In the section of creative writing, I’m going to write a poem about a food market in Shoreditch called “Dinerama”. I’ve been going to this food market with my friends during summer. In the poem you will see why I enjoy it and how maybe you would feel like visiting it as soon as it opens!!
Have you ever been to the market?
Bustling through the crowds
Hand-picking through produce
Buying by dozens and pounds
Have you ever been to the market?
Your nostrils filled with scents
The sweet fragrance of ripe fruits
The rotting cabbages’ stench
Have you ever been to the market?
Deafening vendors, you’ll hear
Shouting out food prices
Both unreasonable and fair
Have you ever been to the market?
Basket and bags in hand
You arrive with them empty
And, when leaving, so too are your pants
If you’ve been to such a market
How would you like to know
That there’s another of the exact liking
But with hot pots and stoves?
With thick crowds, a bustlin’
Bundling up by the stalls
Ordering this dish and that
Eager to try them all
With mouth-watering aromas
Stinking up the air
The smell of grilled cheese
And simmering beer
Oh yes, there’s a market
Where street food lives
Where roaring fires create an arena
Of tummy tickling tastiness
It’s an all-about-food market
Deliciously well cooked
By different people of different backgrounds
With diverse tastes and cookbooks
And they holler out orders
To the chefs by the pots
Stirring up meats and sprinkling cheese
Over wood-fired pizzas
When you go to this market
Your belly is your bag
Your belly is your basket
Eat until you lag
Try a pillow-soft Yum Bum,
Or get Up In My Grill!
They’ve got perfectly pink steak
And fries the size of shoestrings
Tucka Burgers will have you cussin’
Man, What The Tuck!
This dry-aged patty, oozing halloumi
A yummy gooey gook
Want a taste of the Caribbean?
Well, White Men Can’t Jerk!
Oh, I’m not pointing fingers
That’s what it says on their shirts
Jerk chicken, rice and peas
Pineapple scotch bonnet jam?
Red Stripe poached wings
And crispy fried plantain?
I like to have a Slushie
At the market’s Big Bar
Or go to Chin Chin Labs
Where science and ice cream are blended
They’re scientific dairy daredevils
Out for sugar-junky souls
They reel you in with pudding
And hand-rolled waffle cones
There’s much to try in this market
As a lover of food, I can tell
You’ll not regret one bite
Not one penny spent
Its the atmosphere that does it,
The music that plays,
It’s the people strolling about
In that happily satiated way
Have you ever been to the market?
There you find everything
Vegetables for your salad,
Herbs and spices
Fruits for your kiddies
Ground produce for your soups,
Well, it is just the same
In this market, I’ve introduced
Dinerama is that market
That caters to every tongue from
Those kids, meat lovers,
And health conscious vegans
And for wine lovers out there
Dinerama has a wife
Her name is Winerama
Get your glass of Red and White wine
And enjoy yourself with music
Sure, you’ve been to the market,
Sure it’s full of colour
But have you been to such a market
Cooking up such flavour?
